The Old Church

It was 10 years ago November 1st that my 38" hair was cut off, the auction of the collection began, and we said started our goodbyes to the Church building that we had, with great love and care, turned into a studio, home and gallery. It was fun to run across these pictures recently when gathering images for a project.

Well, after many years lurking in the corner, Madame Irma is finally finished and ready to make her entrance in a proper way. She is to be paired with Galactic Syzygy - the Cello assemblage that I created for the Denver Young Artist Orchestra's Painted Violin program, which is touring through next Spring.

The next gallery on the tour invited the 17 artists to send along a wall work, and it was fun to finish up Irma for the occasion. I have not had a signed work for show and sale since the complete divestment of my inventory in 2001! She is 48 x 24 plus frame. Acrylic, gilt, Austrian and German Crystal on panel.

I feel like I am setting off on a new chapter. Not that this one is finished, or the number of chapters in my life is somehow determined. Just when I think I am toward the end of the book the pages multiply or demand that I go visit a previous page for reflection or palimpsest.

Pages once empty overflowing with chaos in search of order.

A better problem to have than blank pages.

This is from the Lexicon/World Altar series a few years back (Late 90's?)

It is actually a very romantic concept for the skys to open up and to be whisked off, somewhere over the rainbow, to a place without human trappings or hate, fear or technology.

Until then, we are going to have to work it through. Right here. Right now. Around the world.

It would be so sweet to be picked by the heavenly team, like some line up in grade school and getting picked first. But I fear that we are stuck with ourselves, at least for now. To mow the lawn, clean up our messes, and face the stresses we have all created.

I have had a couple of different conversations lately about unusual cross training. I went through a fairly intense period of sugar work back in 2002/3. I miss it! We built both monumental sculptural forms and designed an edible candy line. We had a blast. It is hot, dangerous, temporal, tempremental, fragile, intense and can be beautiful.

It's not exactly a common form, and it takes a lot to get rolling, but it is such an amazing medium.

This is an illustration I did years ago for an elementary school.

We saw the show TRACES last night. Wonderful stuff, hard working cast.

Of course if I got ahold of them I would get attempt to drag them out the "torn t-shirt" genre without leaving the reality and presence the show demands.

Just some more color in the set and costume - even if it is Carhart.

I guesss that sums up the world, the season, the town, my mood -

I have often joked with Terry that of all the objects I work around and make, I find some of the greatest joy in headdresses. Looking over the hundreds of projects I've done, if there is a way to work a headdress in, I do it - Art show, parade, or building - it gets a headdress. Why I didn't end up in Vegas in some basement steaming feathers is beyond me.

Nicole wrote from India today that she has found sources for miniature Vishnu crowns - Oh joyous day!

I have, and will continue to persue magic for my entire lifetime.

Magical expectations

I have lived a life full of magical expectations. Both from the outside world and myself. I supposedly started it – the expectations – but something or some things must have happened for me to become so obsessed with the belief that magic and dreamlike environments and events do exist, and I must figure out how to craft them.

I suppose I am a Dr. Frankenstein type character in this pursuit – stitching together bits and parts of forgotten corpses to create monsters that can live, express, and be mis-understood.

I still believe that some of the best training in visual design came from the magic lessons I took in High School. I had a great magic teacher (Bruce Spangler) that not only taught us about illusion and stage presence, but about the fundamentals of illusion – timing, visuals & focus.

Backstage for a magician is full of complex needs that the audience (hopefully) never sees – How do I make something appear larger, smaller, taller, or shorter? ….How do a get a handkerchief to look like a dove and a dove to move from it’s hiding place to the sky at the right moment? The many design applications in a magic act are “do or die” (and boy did I die more than a few times…. Obviously I design for a living and am not headlining in Vegas).

Many creative people are unable to elevate there designs to a magical level because they can’t keep a secret.

To be a magician, you must be able to keep the secrets of the tricks. Once accepted duly in to the fellowships & organizations of magic makers, you are exposed to a huge plethora of “tricks” and “patter”. First the tricks. The secrets of a trick may be any one or combination of the basic forms: mechanical, directional, mathematical, alchemical, optical or psychological. The second half of learning a trick is the patter. The patter, or verbal script, is different than a normal script, in that it - A. Often involves audience action or reaction and B. May change based on the interaction and timing of the audience member, and or may change and adapt in timing or order in order to support the trick. Patter is meant to entertain, but also direct and shape the situation.

Magic confirms our existence,

Inspires our fortitude

Rights the wrong.

Magic allows us top forget how bad the food was on that last gig.

That triumph and mystery we feel during a magical spell may be a “life supporting illusion”. I will accept that. I’ll take the illusion. It lifts us up rather than pushing us down.

The good magician uses every point of advantage, no matter how small or subtle to contribute to his or her success. It is the accumulation of details that weaves the web of enchantment. Performing successful magic then becomes possible in an atmosphere that has “suspended disbelief”. The client has crossed the storyteller’s threshold.

In contrast, performing magic in an atmosphere of challenge and suspect is close to impossible.

Many think of magic as “false”. False because it is “illusion” and created through trickery or cheating.

Magic is not trickery.

Trickery – meaning manipulations of reality, is merely one of the tools employed in magic. Trickery is over used and abused, and can give magic a bad taste.

Magic is truth. Magic is real. Magic is actually the highest reality – The highest expression of humanity.
